Melanie Leal, Counseling Student Intern
Supervised by Robyn D Reyna, LPC-S, RPT-S
Navigating day-to-day life can be challenging for children and adults alike. In the midst of development, children and teens often face heightened pressures as they try to understand their identity, manage social expectations, and cope with emotional and academic demands. These challenges can make it difficult for them to feel confident, leading to struggles with self-esteem, peer relationships, and mental health. As they attempt to balance their growing independence with the desire for connection, they may feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or out of place. Similarly, adults can experience feelings of isolation, insecurity, or difficulty adjusting to life changes, all of which can be too much to deal with alone. Irregardless of the challenges you face, your mental health care needs are important.
Often times it is easier to think that your problems are “not that serious,” but your problems do not need to be serious to be taken seriously. The challenges you face are real and not a reflection of who you are. Rather, they are a response to your external circumstances that can be influenced by several underlying factors such as past experiences or trauma. Expressing yourself through play can be a powerful way to process what you’re going through. Play therapy offers a unique space where emotions can be safely explored, allowing you to gain insight and build better coping mechanisms. As a student intern learning to specialize in play therapy, my role is to guide you through this process; offering support in a creative and nurturing environment, where we will work together to find out what you need in order to navigate your challenges and foster personal growth.
You are welcomed in my office as you are. Whether it’s a good day or a bad one, I will be alongside you to support you through your journey in self-exploration. It won’t always be easy, but each session will help you to uncover your own strength and resilience. By the end of our time together, you will have a deeper understanding of yourself as well as the tools and confidence to handle all of life’s challenges.
